This project is all about designing a book and the process that goes into doing so. I was assigned to design a rendition of Grimm's Fairy Tales. There are hundreds of designs out there for this book, so I needed to come up with something that would stand out.
The outside of this book was by far the most important part of the whole project. Without an interesting cover, nobody will pick it up to see the inside.
My main inspiration for the style is art nouveau and magic mirrors. I wanted to mix that fantasy aspect of sleeping beauty's magic mirror with the intricacies of art nouveau. I went for a red & black color palette because I think it gives a mystical and mysterious feel to the cover. I wanted to make the viewer wonder what kind of stories would be on the inside.
I dedicated this book to my father who passed away in July 2020. He contracted COVID-19 and pneumonia from the nursing home he was living in. He sadly succumbed to them while holding the hand of my dear mother - his wife of 12 years. He was my biggest inspiration for continuing my education, so I wanted to create something he would be proud of.
